Area Boy Scouts hold their annual get-together

AREA BOY SCOUTS HOLD THEIR ANNUAL GET-TOGETHER

UPSTATE — Local boys from Pickens County and Powdersville joined upwards of 1,600 Scouts from all around the area for an annual three-day camp out at the Boy Scouts of America “Onward & Upward” Exporee.

Scouts participated in activities such as archery, sharpshooting and mud-runs as well as the traditional Boy Scout events like the Pinewood derby competition and rock-climbing.

“Our boys are learning essential boyhood skills, fostering friendships, building character, and being trained on the responsibilities of participating citizenship,” District Executive Thomas Beach said. “Communities benefit from a Scout program, and it’s a fantastic way for parents to be more involved in their child’s life. Life-long memories are made here.”

The Blue Ridge Council hosts the Exporee every three years in the Upstate, with this year’s event being held at the South Carolina Technology and Aviation Center. Flying National Guard Chinook helicopters, fire fighters, K9 units, U.S. Marine Corps and Greenville Police Bomb Disposal units also participated, showcasing and demonstrating the various tasks and services put forth by their respective organizations.

Beach wanted to stress that while Boy Scouts are for boys ages 11-17, scouting itself is not limited to just the older boys.

“Cub Scouts make up a good portion of the Scouting experience,” stated Beach. “And Venturing Crews are co-ed Scouting units for ages 14-20. Generally, a sibling sister who gets tired of seeing their brother have all the fun joins in on the adventures of a venturing crew.”

But the excitement with the Scouts occurs more than once every three years.

From June the 15 through June 19, Boy Scouts of America will host a Cub Scout Day Camp in Liberty and boys in the first through fifth grade are encouraged to register. The event will be at Liberty’s Flat Rock Baptist Church from 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.

According to Beach, a few of the activities on that day will include a Lego derby race, water bottle rockets, STEM in Scouts program (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), and more, all revolving around a Star Wars theme.

For more information on participating in a Scouting program, or to host a Scouting unit, applicants are encouraged to contact Beach at thomas.beach@scouting.org.
