Guard picks manager for $30M construction projects

The 95,225-square-foot Greenville Readiness Center “is the modern-day version of an armory,” said John Powell, of LTC Associates, architect for both facilities. Located on 14 acres, two units will be based at the center, which will have separate drill halls and a shared kitchen. There also will be space for aviation-related support services.

The Greenville Readiness Center also will be home to the S.C. National Guard’s partnership with Greenville Technical College to train aircraft mechanics through its Federal Aviation Administration-approved program. The facility will include staff offices, classrooms and lab space. The bottom floor will contain an aircraft hangar with space to house 12 aircraft.

“We are very enthusiastic about our partnership with the National Guard and what these facilities will do for a number of our programs,” said Joel Welch, dean of the business and technology division of Greenville Technical College. “Our aircraft maintenance program operates at capacity year-round. With these additions, we will be able to expand that program. Additionally, we’ll be able to increase the training we provide to existing National Guard mechanics as well as grow our new avionics program.”

The 45,500-square-foot Field Maintenance Shop will be located on an adjacent 12 acres and be used to maintain service for up to 896 wheeled vehicles and trailers, along with 30 tracked vehicles. It will include eight work bays and an administration area.

“SCTAC is proud to be the home of the S.C. National Guard Aviation Center of Excellence,” said Jody Bryson, president and CEO of the S.C. Technology and Aviation Center. “When complete, the new Readiness Center and Field Maintenance Shop will provide the perfect complement to the Army Aviation Support Facility, in operation since 2014. The combination of these three state-of-the-art facilities will create a campus at SCTAC that will serve as a major economic development catalyst for SCTAC, the city of Greenville and Greenville County.”

Charlotte-based Hendrick Construction completed the 110,000-square-foot Army Aviation Support Facility at Donaldson Field in February 2014 for the S.C. National Guard. The administration and maintenance facility houses 10 helicopters and is operated by 75 full-time military technicians and serves as the base for 200 Guardsmen. The facility is located on 34 acres adjacent to Donaldson Field.
