Manufacturing showcase back in Greenville this week

The quality and strong presence of advanced manufacturers in this region area has inspired a return of South-Tec to Greenville.

South-Tec is the Society of Manufacturing Engineer's (SME) "premier manufacturing industry showcase in the Southeast for innovation, knowledge and relationships." It will be held this week, Tuesday through Thursday, at the TD Convention Center.

The Dearborn, Mich.-based non-profit SME holds South-Tec every two years. The show was last held in Greenville about a decade ago.

Organizers of the event said Greenville is "a hotbed for advanced manufacturing by companies like Michelin, BMW and Lockheed Martin."

And, with General Electric's major operation here, Greenville has become a very strong part of what's going on in the energy industry, said Dennis Bray, SME president and CEO at Contour Precision.

"We also have all the significant players that have moved into the South Carolina area bringing some advanced manufacturing jobs and some advanced manufacturing companies to our local community," he said. "South-Tec is focused on being able to connect individuals that are working in manufacturing with the latest technology and the latest in advanced manufacturing processing occurring in this local region."

More than 4,000 people are expected to attend South-Tec, where they'll have an opportunity to hear manufacturing thought leaders assess trends affecting the industry.

They can also make side-by-side comparisons of manufacturing technologies from suppliers, distributors and equipment builders from across North America and around the world. Another program will also devote special sessions to showcase student research, products and innovations.

The event will also feature than 300 exhibitors from all across the manufacturing spectrum showcasing their most innovative products. Interactive demonstrations, new product presentations, keynotes, panel discussions, and networking events are also among the show's highlights.

Companies of all sizes will have a unique opportunity at the event to find solutions to their manufacturing processes and be introduced to new tools that are available to streamline their manufacturing, said Cathy Kowalewicz, event manager.

"They'll also be able to walk away with the knowledge of how to utilize the talents in the Greenville area with the education that's being being provided throughout the South Carolina technical college system and the collaboration of those colleges with the manufacturers in the area," she said.

"When these students from the community and technical colleges actually graduate, they are ready to hit the work force," she said. "There's not going to be that two-year gap of trying to train them. So, it's really being able to let businesses know that the talent is here, they're professionally ready, and the collaboration is available for the other businesses to join in."

South Carolina has the fastest growing GDP on the East Coast related to manufacturing, Bray said. A lot of that is because of the investment that has been made in the state over the last number of years in order to not only attract companies and the technology that they used, but readying the workforce needed for those companies to be successful, he said.

"What's very critical for manufacturers today to compete in the global market place is that we really need to use our talent-driven innovation and that means we need the right skills and the right capabilities of our workforce," Bray said.

"We have in manufacturing, in many respects, an aging workforce. What we need to do is inspire the younger generation to see that there really is a very lucrative career for them in the world of manufacturing," he said.
