Greenville, SC- SCTAC will host over 500 military and civilian personnel and 18 aircraft that are participating in the Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System (MAFFS) exercise. The exercise will be conducted the week of April 26- May 2, 2010, with an estimated 90 flights per day throughout this week. MAFFS is a self-contained, reusable 3,000 gallon aerial fluid dispersal system that allows Lockheed C-130 cargo/utility aircraft to be converted to wild land firefighting air tankers. The objective of the MAFFS program is to provide emergency capability to supplement the existing commercial air tanker support on wildfires. This joint programm which is instituted by the U.S. Forest Service, involves Airlift Wings from North Carolinam Wyoming, California and the Air Force Reserve in Colorado. With runways and tarmac areas suitable for the equipment and limited impact on Greenville community's other airports, Donaldson Field is uniquely qualified to host the exercise. The MAFFS exercise only visits the Upstate and Donaldson Field once every five years, and with so many potential visitors to the area for the week, it is expected to have a considerable economic impact on the region. On April 29, 2010 a media/VIP day will be arranged for a special demonstration fly over to drop the large water cargo on the runway at Donaldson Field. The Greenville area makes it easy to recruit technical
resources to the site and hold on to them. You've got the mountains about an
hour or so away and the coast three hours away. Recruiting is not just about
the job, it's about the environment you're asking people to live in. The vision
that this area has for itself has really come together nicely.
