SC Technology and Aviation Center Plays Critical Role in Air Army Missile Defense Command Training

The 263rd AAMDC announces successful training collaboration with Civil Air Patrol at SCTAC last week.

Defending the skies across America is a crucial task the 263rd Air Army Missile Defense Command must be prepared for at all times.  On November 18 and 19, while much of the Upstate held normal nation routines, the SC Technology and Aviation Center(SCTAC) provided real-life scenarios for over 100 soldiers from the 263rd Army Air and Missile Defense Command (AAMDC) Minimum Deployment Package (MDP) to ensure efficiency and safety for future Homeland Defense missions.

"At any one moment, our MDP is responsible to deploy and be prepared to respond to air threats throughout the nation," says Bob MacNaughton, 263rd AAMDC, G3 Operations.  "The training that took place last week is essential for our crews to understand the real-life timing and process.  Furthermore, with the runway, airfield, and management assistance, SCTAC allows imperative placement for our crew that is difficult to find in the homeland."

The training operation, deemed successful by SCTAC, Civil Air Patrol and AAMDC, created authentic exposure with the use of two planes which mocked threatening aircraft.  Used as search and rescue planes, these aircraft flew through the skies over SCTAC while the AAMDC Joint Air Defense Operations Center - Mobile (JADOC-M) tracked their routes and communicated with the crews out on the field.

"We never know when we will be called from anywhere in the nation to execute missions just like this so we take these training drills very seriously," says Sergeant Toby Chupp, MDP team chief.  "During the training, we are ready and alert to strike at any moment."

SCTAC offered the training mission an unprecedented opportunity to set up four sites of crew members in any area within its 2600 acres, giving the AAMDC a unique opportunity to use strategic placement in order to challenge themselves appropriately.  The four sites consisted of crews and infrared heat sensing missiles mounted on vehicles called Avengers.   The crews were spread among SCTAC property and on alert for 48 hours, ready to identify the "enemy plane" and activate the avenger missiles.

"SCTAC and Donaldson Field are proud to help the AAMDC train to protect our freedom," says Peter Cevallos, Airport Operations Director at SCTAC.  "The Donaldson Field airport collaboration allowed for quick touch downs of the mock enemy planes and the coordination of events in order to prevent disturbances of tenants and visitors."

Other recent, local training the AAMDC has undergone in preparation for its diverse responsibility includes training at the Savannah airport and training to protect the Clemson University Memorial Stadium last July.
